A no-experience-needed introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — built for adults who've never set foot on a mat.
Couch to First Stripe is a beginner-friendly introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, built for adults who've never trained before. Inspired by programs like Couch to 5K, it takes you from zero experience through the real foundations of the art: safe falling, escapes, positional control, and mat awareness, while building genuine fitness along the way.
Every class is built for newcomers. No gear required to start, no prior athleticism assumed, no ego at the door. Come curious. Leave capable.
Learn to fall, roll, and shrimp — the physical basics everyone starts with, before anything else.
Build the posture and base that keep you from getting stuck, on top or on bottom.
Get out of mount and side control, even under real pressure.
Keep control from the bottom, no matter who's on top.
Show what you've built, live, and earn your first stripe.
A gi (kimono). A simple, beginner-friendly option will be shared with enrolled students before the first class.
Comfortable athletic wear to train underneath.
Any prior experience, athleticism, or gear beyond the gi. Everyone starts on the couch.
Every season ends the same way. It's not a test you cram for — it's a chance to show, live, that the fundamentals you built over the past several weeks actually hold up. When your instructor ties that first stripe onto your belt, it means one thing: you're no longer on the couch.
Mark has trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2017. He spent five years at Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Carlsbad, going from white belt to purple belt. Since 2022, he has trained at Gracie Barra Escondido, where he now holds the rank of brown belt.
He built Couch to First Stripe for adults who want more from a workout — real stress relief, practical self-defense, personal growth, or just an affordable way to stay active. You do not need experience. You do not need to be young or in great shape. Every class starts with the basics, taught step by step. You walk in without fear, and you walk out with real skills — and the confidence to earn your first stripe.
Enrollment opens through your local community education or recreation catalog. Leave your email and we'll let you know the moment a new season opens near you.
